SLSNR Support Services | Rescue Water Craft

Rescue Water Craft (RWC) are Surf Life Saving Personal Water Craft (often referred to as a Waverunner or Jet Ski) spec'd for SLS operations and operated by experienced Lifeguards from throughout the Region. RWC exist to provide operational support to existing patrols and patrolling / emergency response to non-patrolled areas.

Current RWC Patrols within Surf Life Saving Northern Region

'Support 1' based at Bethells Beach covers most of Auckland's West Coast

'Support 2' based at Ruakaka covers Northland's Bream Bay area

'Support 3' based at Omaha covers Rodney District

'Support 4' based at Orewa covers Auckland's Hibiscus Coast

'Support 5' based at the Auckland Marine Rescue Centre covers Auckland's East Coast Bays area

Service duration varies per vessel. All RWC's are operational for weekends and public holidays over the peak of the summer period, and RWC are operated by both volunteer and paid lifeguards. 

All Lifeguards applying to be on the team must have a very good level of fitness and be dedicated to fill the roster for no less than five shifts per summer.

Becoming a RWC Operator

Applications for the 2018/2019 season will open on Monday 2nd July and close Friday 27th July.

The fitness and experience pre-requisites for this role are minimums, it is expected that all applicants exceed these minimums.


  • Must be 20+ years of age
  • Must be a SLSNZ member
  • At least 2 seasons of patrolling experience
  • Current motor vehicle License
  • First Aid Level 1
  • First Aid Level 2
  • SLSNZ IRB Drivers Award
  • Must swim 400m in under 7min 30secs
  • Must run 3kms in under 20mins
