Buddy Lucas Scholarship

The Buddy Lucas Scholarship is generously funded by Dennis Black (Piha SLSC) and gives three young leaders the opportunity to develop and expand on their knowledge of Surf Life Saving and increase their personal development skills.

Buddy Lucas was a legend of Surf Lifesaving in Northern Region and at his home club of Piha. He joined the Piha SLSC in 1944, gaining his lifeguard award the year after. From there, he went on to win multiple National titles in the surf race and made valuable contributions on the Piha Committee as Club Captain and as President for nearly two decades. Along with this, he received Service and Distinguished Service awards at a Club, District and New Zealand level and was awarded a highly prestigious Life Membership of the Piha SLSC. Buddy remains as one of the pre-eminent leaders within our organization and the Buddy Lucas Scholarship is aimed to foster young leaders within our movement.

The applicants must have demonstrated outstanding leadership ability at a club and/or district level and they are individuals who would like to further his/her leadership capabilities.

The Buddy Lucas Scholarship is a 12 month development programme comprising of three sections:

1. The Buddy Lucas Scholarship is designed to encourage individuals the opportunity to develop self-confidence, increase personal development skills, challenge the individual and hopefully open doors to take on leadership roles within Surf Lifesaving.

2. The aim is for the individual's to reinvest their knowledge and experiences gained by the scholarship back into Surf Lifesaving. Before any project or course, scholars should have a good understanding of the SLSNR structure and the roles of different committees. For example the candidate may wish to sit on the Club Development Advisory Group.

3. This scholarship is about personal development and enhancing leadership skills. The scholar will have up to $2,500 available to assist with expenses pertaining to their chosen project or course. This is not limited so the scholar can look at all options, projects or courses. The candidate could see what courses were under taken in the past or talk to previous candidates. This scholarship could also include outward bound or rotary courses, additional professional development courses or attendance at relevant conferences or exchanges. There could also be other courses that may benefit the candidate.

4. Appropriate training and development pathways and goals will be clearly identified from the beginning. This is to be discussed with the Club Development Manager and Chair and presented to the SLSNR Board and Dennis Black for final approval.

Selection Process

  • Club Development Advisory Group (CDAG) sends out an invitation for nominations in July each year.
